Why is my website so slow, and does it matter?
Usually one of three things: giant uncompressed photos, a page builder loaded with plugins, or cheap shared hosting. All three are fixable, and I check for them in the free audit.
The three usual suspects
Nine times out of ten a slow small business site has one of these problems:
- Photos uploaded straight from a phone at full size. One hero image can weigh more than the rest of the site combined.
- A WordPress or builder site with a pile of plugins and a heavy theme, each one loading its own scripts.
- Bargain hosting that puts your site on a server with hundreds of others.
Why it costs you customers
Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on a weak signal. Every extra second of loading is another chance for them to hit back and call the next result. Google also uses page experience as a ranking signal, so a slow site does not just lose the visitor, it loses the position that brought them.
How to check it yourself
Search for Google PageSpeed Insights, paste in your address, and look at the mobile score. Anything in the red is costing you. If you would rather not dig through it, the free audit covers this and explains what the numbers mean.
What a fix looks like
Sometimes it is an afternoon of compressing photos and removing plugins. Sometimes the site is built on so much bloat that a rebuild is cheaper than a repair. I will tell you which one you are looking at before you spend anything.
